This page lists the steps that need to be completed, the status of each of these steps for your school, and guidance on how to complete the steps. To set homework with Sparx Reader, several setup steps are required, these are detailed on the Getting Started Steps page in your Sparx Reader site. You can use this feature to demonstrate the reading experience, and model careful reading techniques, to new students. These scores provide measures of a student’s performance compared to other students of the same age, based on a standardised scoring process.
Can I set the test as homework?
During the early months of delivery, the decision was made to adjust the homework hand in date to maximise student productivity, particularly for the hard-to-reach pupils. A mid-week deadline built in time for more opportunities to remind pupils during the school day using the hand-in page as motivation. Students will be asked to complete a couple of short questions about their current reading habits. It’s important that the students answer these questions honestly as it helps us to understand the student’s reading confidence and track any improvements they make within Sparx Reader. Sparx Reading Tests provide a starting point if you plan on measuring reading age progress throughout the year, and ensure that the first books a student is offered are as close as possible to their reading level. Supporting all students to read for pleasure
You could also consider setting up a reading club to limefx support students who need a quiet space, or who don’t always have access to a device or the internet at home. The modules do not need to be completed in one session so can be done whenever is convenient. It can be useful, however, to gather all your staff together to discuss what you’ve learned and address any queries. If you do not do the training together, we strongly suggest you set the department your own deadline by which they should complete the training.

Resources for introducing Sparx Reader to your students
If students have a live reading test available when they first log in, they will see the test instead of the onboarding steps. We’ve recently removed the need for students to complete the Sparx Reading Test as part of their onboarding. Whilst we recommend that you set a reading test before students start their reading, this isn’t compulsory.
TAL prides itself on its messaging; everything the school communicates to staff, parents and pupils is given careful consideration, and is simple, centralised and universal. We would encourage every member of staff to complete at least the essential training, which should take around 15 minutes. The second level will also give you great tips on how to use Sparx Reader, which should take a further 20 minutes to watch.
The academy’s wider strategy incorporates many different reading opportunities into the school day, underpinned by Sparx Reader as the vehicle for independent reading practice outside of lessons. Assemblies are devoted to the serialised reading of gripping stories, and pupils are all expected to have a challenging reading book in their bags. As Hannah puts it, surfacing the “right books and putting them into pupils’ hands” is central to maintaining reading momentum, as is widespread conversation about books between students and teachers. Interestingly, TAL does not run a conventional ‘Drop Everything And Read’ programme; instead their expectation that every pupil reads on a daily basis is realised through Sparx Reader. Why do test results differ between SRT and another provider?
With SAS a score of 100 represents average performance, whereas Stanine is on a 1-9 scale centred on 5, with 9 being highest. The test expires after 2 hours by default (though you can extend to 9 hours), to prevent students completing the test outside school. If they haven’t finished by then, a result will not be generated and you will need to re-set them the test for them to complete it.
